Recreation Amid COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the significant value of recreation for the health, wellbeing and social connectedness of our community, and District Staff are currently working hard to create protocols for the safe resumption of services.
The impacts of COVID-19 resulted in the immediate closure of a variety of municipal facilities in response to Provincial Health Officer (PHO) requirements, including our main recreation space at the Community Hall. Reopening public spaces has been a complex task, and the District of Tofino has been committed the careful resumption of important community services such as childcare, outdoor public spaces and municipal offices, and we have heard the importance of opening the Community Hall as quickly as is safely possible.
Improved Recreation Staffing
Despite reduced staffing levels, this summer the District successfully delivered 17 outdoor-focussed programs with 117 registrants/children while carefully navigating the challenges associated with the pandemic.
The Recreation department has now turned its attention to creating safe return-to-play guidelines for each of our programs and the Community Hall. Fall programming will return with increased staff to support the community’s needs as we quickly approach the rainier seasons ahead.
Some Program Limitations to Note
With all that said, not all programs require the same guidelines, and we are committed to providing adaptable strategies in consultation with instructors. In the interim, some programs may be paused or available through the Ucluelet Recreation department as instructors make arrangements to use regional facilities that best meet their needs. We sincerely appreciate the flexibility, ingenuity and understanding of instructors and participants as we work to ensure recreation spaces in Tofino provide adequate measures to keep everyone safe.
Our upcoming programming may need to include plans for scaling down, depending on the course of the pandemic and instructions from the PHO. We will be updating social media channels, answering questions via phone or email, and prioritizing communication with instructors and participants.
Thank you for your patience, Tofino! We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
