Tofino Expands Free Seasonal Shuttle Service
Expanded Schedule and New Bus Pullouts Improve 2019 Shuttle Service
Leave your vehicle behind and get on the bus! The District of Tofino is expanding the popular free summer shuttle. Beginning Friday, June 28th riders will enjoy daily service between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. This year, two buses will service the route during peak times, allowing for increased frequency between 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. until September 2nd. In addition, two weeks of shuttle service has been added from September 3rd to 15th, with peak-time service only (11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.).
The free shuttle runs between Tofino’s downtown core and the Tofino Visitor Centre at Cox Bay, and passengers can hop on and off at any of the marked stops along the route. With the addition of new designated bus pullouts on Pacific Rim Highway, the shuttle will no longer turn off at Abraham Drive and Hellesen Drive. The new bus pullouts provide a safe space for the bus to pull over and allow passengers to wait and disembark.
The shuttle service has been free for users since 2014, and has been increasing in popularity with each season. In 2018, ridership grew by 35% over 2017, with a total of 35,337 locals and visitors commuting between the downtown core and the beaches during the summer.
The shuttle is supported through a blend of Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) and District of Tofino pay parking revenue. Earlier this year, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Lisa Beare, announced changes to the RMI program that support long-term planning and investment for tourism infrastructure on the West Coast. The RMI program provides provincial funding to upgrade and invest in community tourism assets and programming such as the seasonal shuttle, which improve the quality of life for residents as well as the visitor experience.
Shuttle schedules can also be picked up at the Tofino Visitor Centre and Tofino Municipal Hall.
