MONTHLY OUTDOOR WARNING SIREN & EMERGENCY MASS NOTIFICATION SYSTEM
(“ONE CALL NOW”) TESTING
The District of Tofino conducts monthly testing of the Cox Bay and North and Mid-Chesterman Beach outdoor warning sirens (a.k.a. tsunami sirens) on the first Friday of each month at 11:00 am. The “One Call Now” emergency alert system will be tested at the same time as the outdoor warning sirens.
The next test will take place Friday, September 6, 2019.
Testing is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on the first Friday of each month in order to ensure our notification systems are in working order, and to engage the community in emergency preparedness. Residents can visit www.tofino.ca/one-call-now to sign up or to log in to an existing account and update contact information or subscription options.
The system currently allows subscribers to opt-in to email notifications, phone calls, and text messages – or a combination of all three. However, cell service providers require subscribers to agree to receive text messages before you can be contacted by One Call Now. Instructions for signing up and opting in are listed on the webpage above, or the public can contact the District of Tofino for help setting up an account.
The purpose of monthly testing is to ensure that the sirens are functioning effectively and to increase awareness of the importance of personal emergency preparedness.
Siren testing will sound like this:
“This is a test of the emergency warning system. This is only a test. “
-- Westminster Chime (10 sec) --
“Test of the emergency warning system is complete. This has only been a test.”
For testing purposes, the Westminster Chime is used because it is the all-clear tone used in emergency warning systems around the world.
In the event of a real emergency such as a tsunami warning, the sirens will emit a wailing tone (click to listen) and a voice message will indicate the level of alert and advise that listeners tune into an official source of information for details.
In addition to the services provided by the District of Tofino there are a number of Provincial, Federal, and International emergency notification services available for subscription which can be found on the recently updated Emergency Preparedness and new Tsunami Information webpages.
