Multi-Modal Transportation Plan

The District of Tofino has received a grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to develop a Multi-Modal Transportation Plan (MMTP) to support the reduction of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions in Tofino. Tofino’s Community Energy Plan (2010) found that 71% of all community-wide GHG emissions came from on-road transportation. The plan will address transit, active transportation, parking, funding, and land use. A key goal of the MMTP is to reduce parking and traffic congestion, and increase active transportation for both locals and tourists alike.

To kick things off, devices will be installed at various intersections around town to count pedestrian and traffic movements from Friday, August 24th to Thursday, August 30th. Students from Vancouver Island University will be completing a parking inventory in the Downtown village area on Friday August 24th and Saturday August 25th. This data collection is the first step in developing a baseline of information to understand in detail the current traffic and parking conditions within the District in order to make fact based decisions on transportation in Tofino.
