Mid-Chesterman Outdoor Warning Siren
Please be advised that the mid-Chesterman parking area will be closed to install the District of Tofino’s third outdoor warning siren (a.k.a. tsunami sirens) between October 2nd and October 6th.
The siren will be located at the north-west corner of the mid-Chesterman parking area. System optimization will take place on October 11th & 12th and the siren will be tested regularly on the first Friday of every month at 11:00 a.m. along with the others. The intent of this siren installation is to expand the audible warning coverage for the North & South Chesterman Beach areas. See Figures 1 & 2 below.

Figure 2. Expanded Siren Coverage
The purpose of the outdoor warning sirens is to provide notification to vulnerable outdoor areas, such as beaches. There are many factors that affect the audibility of the sirens, in particular, structural barriers (built and natural). For this reason, sirens are not the best means of notification for people in their homes.
There are a number of different localized emergency notification methods that are better suited to people in their homes; including:
- One Call Now (text, phone, and email) system;
- Social media @TofinoEmergency, @TofinoCA, District of Tofino Facebook;
- District news letter subscription list (Sign up at www.tofino.ca);
- Weather radio, local radio (90.1FM); and
- Door-to-door contact with your neighbours.
In addition, there are a number of Provincial, Federal, and International emergency notification methods available for subscription: @NWS_NTWC, @PreparedBC, @EmergencyInfoBC, Emergency Info BC, http://ntwc.arh.noaa.gov, and www.weather.gc.ca
