TOFINO RECEIVES FUNDING FOR NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATION NEAR COX BAY

TOFINO B.C. – The Province of British Columbia recently announced that it will be expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across Vancouver Island to provide more clean transportation options, support the clean local economy, and reduce pollution.  The District of Tofino applied for funding in partnership with 11 other local and regional governments, and is excited to see the installation of one double port Level 2 charger coming to the Tofino Visitor Centre in summer 2021.

The new EV charging stations are in key locations are based on public demand and current gaps in availability. Tofino boasts approximately 22 chargers on private property, but just one public charger at the Municipal Hall in downtown Tofino.  The new double port charger at the Tofino Visitor Centre will provide public charging access in south Tofino. Level 2 chargers are the most commonly seen type of electric charging station and allow all types of EVs to plug in; they also deliver an 80% charge in approximately 4 to 6 hours.

The cost of the new double port Level 2 charger at the Visitor’s Centre is approximately $15-18,000 for purchase, installation and connection. The District of Tofino will contribute $6,000 through the Resort Municipality Initiative program, with the remainder shared by the provincial government’s CleanBC Communities Fund and the federal government’s Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The roughly $230,000 total from provincial and federal government programs will allow for the installation of 28 EV charging stations on Vancouver Island, increasing the existing network of Level 2 EV charging stations across the mid-island region.
