Understanding Property Taxes
The District of Tofino provides residents with many services which include water, sewer, drainage, transportation, parks, recreation, childcare, and protective services including bylaw, fire protection, and emergency planning.
Property taxes are the District’s main source of revenue to pay for the services provided. District Council determines the budget required to provide the services and a municipal tax rate is set to collect the necessary taxes.
On your Property Tax Bill there are levies from the Province of BC for school taxes and for other regional bodies including, Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, Regional Hospital District, BC Assessment Authority, Regional Library, Municipal Finance Authority, and Police. These taxing authorities determine the amounts payable and the District collects on their behalf, remitting 100% of what is collected.
Property taxes are calculated by taking the assessed value of your property, divide by 1000 and multiply by the tax rate for the appropriate class.
If the value of my property increases, does the District get extra revenue?
Changes in property values do not change the overall tax levy. The overall tax levy is set by Council by determining the revenue required to provide the services of the municipality. The rates are then developed based on applying the overall budget amount proportionately, based on the proportion of assessments.
Municipal Property Tax Rates
District Council determines the budget it needs to provide services to residents and businesses. Each year in May, a Property Tax Rate is set to collect the necessary taxes to pay for the many important services provided.
