Election Notice: Call for Nominations to be a Candidate

Starting at 9:00 am on August 30, 2022, the Chief Election Officer will receive nominations for the following offices:

  • 1 (one) Mayor
  • 6 (six) Councillors

Terms are for 4 (four) years starting November 1, 2022.

Candidate information packages, including nomination documents and background materials, are available now at the District of Tofino Municipal Office, 121 Third Street, by appointment during regular office hours, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday, or by emailing ac.onifot@noitcele.

Qualifications for office:

To be nominated, elected, and hold office, you must:

  • be a Canadian citizen;
  • be age 18 or older on general voting day (October 15, 2022);
  • have been a resident of B.C. for at least six months before filing nomination documents; and
  • not be disqualified by law from voting in an election in B.C. or from being nominated for, elected to, or holding office.

Filing procedures

Nominations will be received by the Chief Election Officer or a designated person from 9:00 am on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, until 4:00 pm on Friday, September 9, 2022 (excluding weekends).

Nomination documents may be delivered to the Chief Election Officer in person (by appointment), or by mail or courier, to District of Tofino, PO Box 9, 121 Third Street, Tofino, BC V0R 2Z0. Prospective candidates are strongly encouraged to file nomination documents in person by making an appointment with the Chief Election Officer during the nomination period.

Documents may also be submitted by email to ac.onifot@noitcele or by fax 250-725-3775 with originals to follow no later than 4:00 pm on Friday, September 16, 2022. It is the nominee’s responsibility to ensure all required forms are received by the deadline date. Nomination documents that are not delivered in person must include the required solemn declaration.

Campaign expense limits

Contact Elections BC for information about campaign expense and advertising limits.
Expense limits for candidates during the campaign period (September 17-October 15, 2022) are set by the province as follows:

  • Mayor - $10,797.83
  • Councillor - $5,398.92

Third party advertising limits

Expense limits set by the province for third party advertising are as follows:

  • Directed - $809.84 limit applies to advertising about a Tofino candidate or elector organization
  • Cumulative - $161,967.47 limit applies to both directed and issue advertising
