New Temporary Parking Lot Available August 1

A temporary parking lot at the site of the former Tuff City Bike Park will be available for oversized vehicles beginning August 1, 2024.

The Tuff City Bike Park, which was at the end of its operational lifecycle, was dismantled and removed during conveyance construction works for the Wastewater Treatment Plant. The future long-term use of this area will be reevaluated after the summer of 2024 in alignment with the development of the upcoming Recreation and Parks Master Plan, which is expected to be released in Spring 2025. Residents are encouraged to participate in this planning process through public consultation, launching on Talk Tofino in the coming months.

In the meantime, as this area remains cleared and vacant, crews have prepared a temporary parking lot. This temporary parking lot is designated for oversized vehicles including RVs and boat trailers attached to vehicles. This decision was considered and received Council authorization at two Council Meetings (June 25 & July 10, 2024). Public input was encouraged in these decisions and was made available at Tofino.ca, at two Council meetings, and notice was provided via email newsletter and social media.

The 2024 rates are:

  • 2 hours: $5.00
  • 12 hours: $12.50
  • 24 hours: $15.50
  • 7 days: $44.00
  • 14 days: $81.00

Please note that overnight camping is strictly prohibited in this parking area.

Additional RV parking is available in designated areas along Gibson Street and Arnet Road.

Pay Parking Funds Community Initiatives

It is estimated that the addition of this temporary parking lot will increase the District's parking revenue by approximately $5948 in 2024. Revenues from parking throughout Tofino (including beach and downtown pay parking) go towards the District's Pay Parking Reserve Fund, which helps to fund various initiatives throughout the District, including:

  • Recreation Facilities & Equipment
  • Roads, Sidewalks and MUP Infrastructure
  • Parks Facilities
  • Transit

Most recently, funds from the Pay Parking Reserve Fund have helped to fund a portion of the Village Green & Neill Street upgrades, including the newly completed tennis, pickleball, & basketball courts and will also fund a portion of the Wickaninnish Community School sports field upgrades to be completed in the fall.
