Extreme Heat & Drought

When The Coast Heats Up

While Tofino’s coastal climate has traditionally kept extreme heat and drought conditions rare, climate change is shifting those patterns. Heat events are occurring more frequently and with greater intensity, and drought conditions are becoming a growing concern during the summer and early fall.

Staying Safe During Extreme Heat:

  • Stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours.
  • Wear lightweight, breathable clothing.
  • Keep your home cool by closing blinds or using fans.
  • Spend time in air-conditioned or designated cooling spaces.
  • Check in on vulnerable neighbours, seniors, and pets.

Understanding Drought: Drought is a recurring climate event caused by a combination of low snowpack, delayed rainfall, and prolonged hot, dry conditions. Due to climate change, droughts are becoming more frequent, longer-lasting, and severe.

Water Conservation and Preparedness:

  • Follow all water conservation stages issued by the District of Tofino or while travelling elsewhere in B.C.
  • Make water conservation a daily habit, even outside of drought periods.
