Storms & Coastal Flooding
Weathering the West Coast
Tofino’s stunning coastal location places it at the forefront of powerful natural forces. From heavy rain and windstorms to king tides and coastal flooding, these events can develop quickly and leave lasting impacts. While storms are a natural part of West Coast life, their intensity and unpredictability, especially during the fall and winter months, make preparedness essential. This page provides key information on what to expect, how to prepare, and what to do during and after storms to help protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property.
Heavy Rain & Flooding
Tofino is no stranger to heavy rainfall. With its location on the edge of the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by mountainous terrain, the region experiences intense and prolonged rain events. While rain is a natural and expected part of life on the coast, extreme or prolonged rainfall can overwhelm both natural and built drainage systems, leading to flooding and property damage.
Flooding can be caused by seasonal storms, clogged storm drains, saturated soils, and rising sea levels. Low-lying areas, such as those near beaches, creeks, or inlets, are particularly susceptible.
What to Expect:
- Pooling water on roads and hazardous driving conditions.
- Water accumulation in low-lying areas.
How to Prepare:
- Keep storm drains near your home clear of debris.
- Have an emergency kit with food, water, and supplies.
- Know alternative travel routes in case of road closures.
- Avoid driving or walking through flooded areas.
- Sand and bags are available at the District of Tofino Public Works Yard (620 Industrial Way).
During Heavy Rain & Flooding:
- Stay indoors unless travel is necessary.
- Monitor weather updates and emergency alerts.
- Evacuate immediately if directed by emergency authorities.

Storm Surges
Storm surges occur when strong winds and low atmospheric pressure push seawater inland, raising ocean levels above the normal high tide. The impact is often much greater when these events occur alongside king tides, which are exceptionally high tides that occur a few times each year due to the gravitational alignment of the sun and moon.
When storm surges and king tides occur simultaneously, the result can be sudden and severe coastal flooding, especially in low-lying or waterfront areas. Strong waves may also accompany these events, causing erosion and greater damage to shorelines.
What to Expect:
- Temporary coastal flooding, especially near the shoreline.
- Erosion or damage to waterfront infrastructure.
- Dangerous surf and strong currents.
How to Prepare:
- Know if your property is in a coastal flood zone.
- Move valuables and electronics to higher ground or elevate them if possible.
- Avoid shoreline areas during king tides and storm surges.
- Sand and bags are available at the District of Tofino Public Works Yard (620 Industrial Way).
During Storm Surges & King Tides:
- Stay away from beaches, docks, and coastal trails.
- Monitor weather updates and emergency alerts.
- Evacuate immediately if directed by emergency authorities.
Wind Storms
High winds often accompany coastal storms and can cause significant damage to trees, power lines, and buildings. Winds can reach dangerous speeds, leading to flying debris, downed trees, and power outages.
What to Expect:
- Power outages and communication disruptions.
- Falling branches or trees.
- Flying debris and structural damage.
How to Prepare:
- Secure outdoor items like patio furniture, garbage bins, and decorations.
- Trim trees and remove dead branches around your home.
- Ensure your emergency kit includes flashlights, batteries, and backup power sources.
- Charge electronic devices in advance.
During Windstorms:
- Stay indoors and away from windows.
- Avoid wooded areas and trails.
- Stay at least 10 metres away from fallen power lines and call 911.
