Water Restrictions Update
Posted: Jul 17, 2024 | By: Communications
Residents and businesses are reminded that the District of Tofino is currently under Stage 1 Water Restrictions, which have been in place since May 13, 2024.
Since implementing these restrictions, the conservation efforts of residents & businesses have been effective. Thanks to the entire community's commitment to water conservation in combination with the rainfall received throughout the spring and early summer, the District has not yet needed to escalate to Stage 2 restrictions.
Tofino's water is collected with gratitude from rain-fed streams and reservoirs on Meares Island, protected by the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks. With limited rain expected in the next 14 days, please continue conserving water to avoid the need for enhanced restrictions.
During Stage 1 Water Restrictions, it is mandatory for businesses to display water conservation information and educational materials in:
- All accommodation units and rooms
- All visitor-facing commercial businesses, including restaurant tables, kitchens, cash registers, booking offices, and websites
Businesses can create their own water conservation messaging materials or download/print materials from www.tofino.ca/water. Physical messaging materials are also available at the Tofino Visitor Centre & the District of Tofino Municipal Hall.
During Stage 1 Water Restrictions, watering lawns, gardens, trees, and landscaped areas is limited to:
- Using a hand-held hose with an automatic shut-off mechanism
- Using a hand-held canister
- Using a sprinkler or a drip irrigation system
