Meares Island Submarine Water Pipeline Upgrades Complete

Over the past month, a section of submarine water pipeline that supplies water from Meares Island to Tofino was ruptured on two separate occasions. In both instances, District of Tofino Public Works crews were able to quickly isolate and repair the leak in at times, semi-submerged tidal conditions. During these 2 instances, crews temporarily shut off partial water supply from source reservoirs, triggering temporary water restrictions to ensure adequate reserves for fire protection. Public notices were issued, the community reacted positively and water consumption decreased when conservation measures were published.

On Thursday, July 6, 2023, engineering crews returned to the rupture site to conduct a thorough repair. Lower tidal conditions allowed for a longer window for crews to repair the problem section of water pipe.  As of 11:34AM, public works crews successfully repaired the pipe with additional structural support to allow for a longer operational lifespan.

The pipeline repair will strengthen the resilience of Tofino’s water system by maximizing  water collected on Meares Island, protected by Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks in the Haahuulthii of the Tla-o-qui-aht Ha'wiih, and will ensure that our resources will last longer throughout the summer.

We appreciate your cooperation throughout the repairs of this critical piece of infrastructure.
