Power Outages

When the Lights Go Out

Power outages are common in coastal communities like Tofino, especially during stormy seasons when high winds, falling trees, and heavy rainfall can damage power lines and infrastructure. Vehicle accidents, planned maintenance, or system failures can also cause outages. Restoring power in remote areas, like Tofino, can take longer due to limited access and challenging weather conditions.

Even short outages can be disruptive, causing the loss of lighting, heat, refrigeration, internet access, and phone service. For households that rely on electric heating or well water systems, power loss can quickly affect health and safety.

What to Expect:

  • Loss of power, heat, and communication services.
  • Risk of food spoilage due to prolonged outages.

How to Prepare:

  • Have an emergency kit prepared, which includes essential supplies such as flashlights, battery-operated candles, non-perishable food, and water.
  • Charge electronic devices and have an alternative power source available.

During a Power Outage:

  • Unplug sensitive electronics to prevent damage from power surges.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to maintain food quality and freshness.
  • Check on neighbours, particularly vulnerable individuals.
  • If using a generator, ensure it is operated safely outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
