Wildfires

A Rainforest Not Immune To Fire

While Tofino’s coastal rainforest environment is generally more humid and less fire-prone than the interior of British Columbia, the risk of wildfires is growing as climate patterns shift. Extended periods of dry weather, higher temperatures, and strong winds can increase the potential for wildfire ignition and spread, even in areas traditionally considered low-risk. In nearby forests and along the highway corridor, dry conditions can lead to fast-moving fires that threaten access routes, air quality, and the community.

Smoke from distant fires can also affect air quality in Tofino, even when they are hundreds of kilometres away. Understanding fire risk levels, respecting fire bans, and being ready to evacuate if necessary are essential to living and working in a region surrounded by forested lands.

What to Expect:

  • Smoke and poor air quality.
  • Evacuations are ordered if fires threaten populated areas.
  • Road closures and restricted access to outdoor areas.

How to Prepare:

During a Wildfire:

  • Evacuate immediately if instructed to do so.
  • Keep windows and doors closed to prevent smoke from entering your home.
  • Reduce time spent outdoors and avoid vigorous outdoor activities to reduce your exposure to smoke.
  • Stay updated through official emergency channels.

Camping Responsibly

Nearly half of all wildfires in B.C. are caused by human carelessness. Reduce the risk by following these rules:

  • Always check for fire bans and restrictions before starting a campfire.
  • Keep fires small.
  • Have at least eight litres of water or a shovel nearby.
  • Clear the area around your fire to bare dirt for at least one metre.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Ensure fires are fully extinguished and ashes are cool before leaving.
  • Report wildfires or unattended fires by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 from a mobile phone.
