As bears become more active throughout spring, the District of Tofino is reminding residents and businesses that garbage carts are among the most common attractants for wildlife. Under the District’s Wildlife Attractant Bylaw, all property owners and occupants share a responsibility to properly secure garbage and other attractants.
Best practice: Store carts indoors or in a secure shed until collection day
If carts must be stored outside, they should be:
- Clean and free of food residue
- Locked at all times except collection day use
- Anchored so they cannot be tipped, dragged, or opened by wildlife
WildSafeBC Pacific Rim has provided the District with free supports for residents:
- Free stainless steel carabiners available at the District of Tofino Municipal Office. These replace older versions that some bears learned how to open.
- Anchoring material gift cards for Windsor Plywood, available at the Municipal Office
- Electric fencing subsidies and installation support for wildlife attractants
Helping secure attractants protects both the community and local wildlife.
