National Day for Truth & Reconciliation – September 30, 2024
Posted: Sep 25, 2024 | By: Communications
On Monday, September 30, 2024, residents of Tofino are invited to pause and reflect for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
This day remembers the children who never returned home from residential schools, as well as the survivors, their families, and their communities. It is a time to acknowledge the profound impacts of the residential school system and to foster understanding, healing, and reconciliation.
The District of Tofino Council remains committed to truth and reconciliation, working in partnership with the Tla-o-qui-aht, Ahousaht, and Hesquiaht First Nations to strengthen relationships and foster understanding.
"As we remember those lost to the tragic legacy of residential schools and the immense strength of the survivors, we must also reflect on our roles, the importance of listening and taking meaningful action. The truths shared by Indigenous Peoples, both locally and across the country, shape our shared history and guide the path forward. On Monday, September 30, we encourage everyone to seek deeper understanding, engage in meaningful conversations, and wear orange as a symbol that every child matters. Through learning, reflecting, and collective action, we can move toward a more compassionate and respectful future for all. Let us acknowledge the lasting impacts of residential schools, stand in solidarity, and continue working toward reconciliation as a community rooted in respect and understanding." – District of Tofino Mayor and Council
On Monday, September 30, 2024, starting at 11 AM, Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation will host a march from the First Street Dock along Campbell Street & Pacific Rim Highway to Tin Wis. The public is invited to join the march. Lunch and cultural activities will take place throughout the afternoon at Tin Wis. Event Details.
