Province Announces Category 2 & 3 Fire Ban

Effective date:  12 noon on Thursday, May 18, 2023

Please be advised that the Coastal Fire Centre will be prohibiting Category 2 (back yard) and Category 3 (industrial) open fires effective 12:00 noon Thursday May 18th, 2023.⁠

Category 1 Campfires (and beach fires) are still permitted. Fires must be contained to an elevated clean burning or reduced smoke fire appliance. Fires made directly on the beach are not permitted. Please follow Tofino Beach Fire regulations here: tofino.ca/our-community/parks-natural-spaces/

Category 2 (backyard) open fires are banned:⁠
• Material in one pile not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width⁠
• Material concurrently in 2 piles each not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width⁠
• Stubble or grass over an area that does not exceed 0.2 hectares⁠

Category 3 (industrial) open fires are banned:⁠
• Material concurrently in 3 or more piles each not exceeding 2 metres in height and 3 metres in width⁠
• Material in one or more piles each exceeding 2 metres in height or 3 metres in width⁠
• One or more windrows, none of which exceed 200 metres in length or 15 metres in width⁠
• Stubble or grass over an area exceeding 0.2 hectares⁠

In addition to these prohibitions, the Coastal Fire Centre will also be restricting the following activities:⁠
• Fireworks⁠
• Sky Lanterns⁠
• Binary Exploding Targets⁠
• Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description⁠
• Air Curtain Burners⁠
