Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation & District of Tofino Sign Friendship Accord

On September 30, 2026, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and the District of Tofino signed the ƛułst̓ał Friendship Accord, marking an important milestone in the relationship between the two governments.
Purpose of the ƛułst̓ał Friendship Accord
The ƛułst̓ał Friendship Accord reflects shared values and a commitment to building a lasting relationship based on trust, respect and proactive engagement.
Its vision is to create a bond of friendship that endures and grows stronger with each generation of leaders. The ƛułst̓ał Friendship Accord also recognizes a shared responsibility to care for people and the health of the lands, waters and sky.
How the Relationship Will Grow
The ƛułst̓ał Friendship Accord is grounded in friendship, honesty, kindness and a willingness to learn from one another.
It recognizes that a strong relationship requires more than words or gestures. Both governments commit to listening and learning, making space for different perspectives, having difficult conversations with kindness and taking meaningful action together.
What the Accord Will Guide
The ƛułst̓ał Friendship Accord will serve as a framework for ongoing collaboration between Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and the District of Tofino.
Some of the current areas of focus include:
- watershed oversight, land visions and governance;
- master plans presented and endorsed collectively;
- an equitable voice in economic development and growth; and
- greater education and awareness of the ƛułst̓ał Friendship Accord throughout the region.
The ƛułst̓ał Friendship Accord is intended to evolve as the relationship grows, with both governments sharing responsibility for its success and reviewing their work together over time.
Signing the ƛułst̓ał Friendship Accord on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation reflects a commitment to reconciliation through relationships and action. It also carries that commitment forward to future leaders, Councils and staff, for the benefit of generations to come.
