The District of Tofino is pleased to announce that the Community Children’s Centre has been selected to join the $10 a Day ChildCareBC Program administered by the Province of British Columbia’s Ministry of Education and Child Care.
Starting April 1, 2025, the Community Children’s Centre, operated by the District of Tofino, will become one of more than 300 child care facilities across British Columbia offering child care for no more than $10 a day. Full-time care for children attending 5 days a week will pay a maximum monthly fee of $200. For those who attend full-time for 1-4 days a week, parents will pay $10 a day to a maximum of $200 a month. This significant shift will provide much-needed financial relief for local families.
“Affordable child care plays a critical role in building an inclusive and sustainable community,” said District of Tofino Mayor Dan Law. “For families in our community, the increasing expenses associated with child care have emerged as a challenging concern. By having a $10 a Day ChildCareBC centre, we are helping families stay rooted in Tofino, easing day-to-day pressures, and creating the conditions for our community to thrive.”
In addition to these savings, eligible families may also qualify for the Affordable Child Care Benefit, an income-tested program that can further reduce—or even eliminate—monthly child care fees. Families earning up to $111,000 annually may be eligible, with benefit amounts based on household income and family size.
The District of Tofino gratefully acknowledges the financial contribution from the Province of British Columbia for the $10 a Day ChildCareBC Program offered through the Canada-British Columbia Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care Agreement. These investments in the creation of new licensed child care spaces and the ongoing growth of $10-a-day child care in communities throughout British Columbia represent further progress in partnership with the federal government.
“By investing in high-quality, affordable child care, we are supporting families in Tofino and strengthening this community - we are so excited to bring the $10 a Day ChildCareBC program here,” said Lisa Beare, Minister of Education and Child Care. “Our government is taking action to ensure that families in every part of B.C. have access to affordable child care in their community, because we know how vital it is for working parents to have a safe, nurturing, caring environment to drop off their kids in close to home.”
