Posted: Jul 30, 2026   |   By: Communications

The District of Tofino is replacing the aging wooden stairs that connect the Tonquin Trail to Tonquin Beach near the Tofino Community Hall and Peterson Drive access points.

The existing wooden components have deteriorated and are beginning to rot. Replacing them will help maintain safe and reliable access for trail users.

What Work Will Be Completed?

The project will include:

  • Removal of the existing wooden stair components
  • Construction of new stairs using yellow cedar
  • Reuse of the existing concrete base structures
  • Installation within the existing stair footprint

The project will not change the design, size or location of the stairs. No trees will be removed as part of the work.

Construction Schedule and Closures

Crews are scheduled to work from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday.

The construction schedule may change due to weather, site conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.

August 4 to 7, 2026

The Tonquin Trail section between the Peterson Drive access and the stairs will be closed while crews:

  • Remove the existing wooden stairs
  • Bring construction materials to the site
  • Prepare the area for installation

August 8 to 14, 2026

The trail section from the Tofino Community Hall & Peterson Drive will reopen, but the stairs will remain closed while crews complete construction.

Project Funding

The project has a total budget of $22,200 and is fully funded through the District’s participation in the Province of British Columbia's Resort Municipality Initiative program.
