The District of Tofino was recently notified that the application for funding to Infrastructure Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings Program, aimed at supporting the construction of the Tofino Community Recreation Facility, was not successful.

This grant would have funded over $8 million of the projected $14 million needed for the facility's construction.

The Tofino Community Recreation Facility, identified as a critical objective in the 2015 Tofino Recreation Management Plan and the 2021-2023 Council Strategic Plan, aimed to provide improved indoor recreational opportunities for the community.

The facility was to include a gymnasium, fitness room, multi-purpose room, and potential provision for a future pool or library.

With the grant application not selected for funding, the project will not proceed at this time. Still, the District remains open to revisiting it if funding becomes available.

Despite this setback, the District remains dedicated to improving recreational opportunities as outlined in the 2021-2023 Council Strategic Plan. The following initiatives are underway:

• Providing gymnasium space for various drop-in programs at the Wickaninnish Community School through a partnership with School District 70.
• Redevelopment of Wickaninnish Community School sports fields to improve recreational facilities.
• Improvements to the Village Green basketball and tennis facilities including the addition of four pickleball courts.
• Commencing the development of the Recreation and Parks Master Plan in 2024, which will offer significant opportunities for community input regarding both indoor and outdoor recreation spaces.

While the District of Tofino's application for funding for the Tofino Community Recreation Facility was unsuccessful, the commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities within the community remains. Through ongoing partnerships and future planning initiatives, the District aims to continue providing accessible and diverse recreational options for its residents.
