Category 1 Campfire Prohibition

To help reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires, the Coastal Fire Centre will prohibit Category 1 campfires effective Thursday, July 16, 2026, at 12 PM. This prohibition is in addition to the Category 2 and 3 fire prohibitions that have been in place since May 7, 2026.
These prohibitions will be in place until October 31, 2026, or until the order is rescinded.
What is Prohibited
The following are not allowed:
- All open fires, including:
- Campfires (Category 1)
- Larger fires (Category 2 and 3)
- Burn barrels and burn cages
- Fireworks, sky lanterns, and exploding targets
- Wood-fired devices, including:
- Wood-fired hot tubs
- Wood-fired pizza ovens
- Any other wood-fired devices (unless vented through a building)
- Controlled air incinerators, air curtain burners, and carbonizers
What is Still Allowed
- Propane or gas fire pits (CSA or ULC-rated)
- Charcoal, propane, or gas cooking stoves with a flame under 15 cm
Report Fires
During the prohibition, the public is encouraged to report any observed prohibited fires. Please call the District of Tofino Bylaw at 250-266-1674. If unable to reach Bylaw, contact the RCMP non-emergency number at 250-725-3242. Before calling, please confirm that fires are not coming from propane devices.
For any unattended and out-of-control fires, please call 9-1-1 immediately.
