Tofino, B.C. – The District of Tofino is pleased to announce it has received $25,000 in funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. This grant will support the continued delivery and expansion of the District’s SMILE Program (Support Meals Improving Lives of Elders), a weekly initiative that enhances the well-being, inclusion, and social connectedness of local seniors (aged 55+).
The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal initiative that funds community-based projects designed to enhance the quality of life for seniors through social participation and engagement.
Each Wednesday, the District hosts the SMILE Social at the Tofino Community Hall. An average of 15 to 20 seniors gather for a warm, chef-prepared meal followed by engaging activities such as art workshops, movement classes, guest presentations, and peer-to-peer skill sharing.
The SMILE Program is free and open to all seniors in the community. No registration is required.
For those unable to attend in person, the District collaborates with the Better at Home Program, offered through the Pacific Rim Hospice Society, to deliver soup and conduct friendly visits. Each week, 10 to 20 seniors receive meals through this service.
The $25,000 grant will support program costs, including honoraria for chefs, presenters, and mentors; food and activity supplies; and special events such as a Holiday Social and bonus summer excursions.
Looking ahead, the District plans to introduce more workshops that focus on intergenerational connection, digital literacy, and health promotion. Work is also underway to develop a replicable model that can be shared with other coastal communities, expanding the program’s impact across the region.
