Holiday Fire Safety Tips
Posted: Dec 3, 2025 | By: Communications
The Tofino Volunteer Fire Department encourage residents to take a few simple steps to keep homes safe this holiday season. This time of year brings families, neighbours, and friends together. It also brings added fire risks from trees, lights, decorations, and candles. A few mindful habits can protect loved ones and help everyone enjoy a safe and festive winter.
Christmas Trees
You can reduce the risk of fire by choosing and caring for your trees with attention.
- Keep in mind that Christmas trees become extremely flammable when dry. A dry tree can ignite quickly and burn with intense speed, often being fully consumed in seconds. Be sure to water your tree frequently.
- If choosing an artificial tree, confirm it is made of flame-resistant or flame-retardant materials.
- Set up the tree at least three (3) feet away from heat sources such as radiators, televisions, fireplaces, or heating ducts.
- Ensure the tree does not block any doors or exits.
- Never use lit candles on or near a Christmas tree.
Holiday Lights
Lighting adds warmth to the season. Safe use of lights helps prevent fires and electrical hazards.
- Use outdoor lights outdoors and indoor lights indoors.
- Ensure all lights display a CSA approval sticker.
- Inspect lights before installation and replace cracked bulbs or strings with frayed, broken, or exposed wires.
- Avoid connecting more light strings than recommended by the manufacturer.
- Turn off all indoor and outdoor lights before going to bed or leaving home.
Candles
Candles are a common source of holiday fires. Safe alternatives and careful use can reduce risk.
- Choose LED candles instead of open flame candles whenever possible.
- Keep candles away from curtains, paper, furniture, and other flammable items.
- Place candles in sturdy holders on stable surfaces and keep them away from drafts, children, and pets.
The Tofino Volunteer Fire Department thanks residents for helping keep the community safe throughout the holidays.
