National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30, 2023
Truth and Reconciliation
September 30 is a day marked to honour the healing journeys of residential school survivors and their families. This can be a sensitive time for many in this community, so tread lightly and take a moment to engage in meaningful discussions about the history and legacy of the residential school system.
The District of Tofino acknowledges the traditional and unceded territory of the ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation), on whose ancestral lands we work, live and play.
Out of respect for the survivors of the residential school system, the Municipal Office will be closed on Monday, October 2, 2023.
This year, the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust is partnering with Ucluelet Secondary School (USS) to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
During this month-long project, students at USS are creating artifacts of learning such as poetry, orange shirts, research projects, and investigations into the 94 calls to action. Their artifacts will be displayed alongside the newest exhibit from the Legacy of Hope Foundation: "Indian Day Schools in Canada – An Introduction.”
