Upcoming Closure and Traffic Changes on Gibson Street

The District of Tofino will implement changes to Gibson Street between First and Third Streets to improve safety for all users. This section of Gibson Street will be fully closed from March 25 to March 31, 2026.

During this time, the road will be closed to all vehicle traffic, parking, and pedestrian access. This temporary closure will allow crews to complete upgrades, including new signage, parking stops, and a turnaround area to support existing offshore permit parking.

The area is expected to reopen as a no-through road on April 1, 2026, or earlier if work is completed ahead of schedule. Vehicle access will remain in place for offshore permit parking, and pedestrian access will be restored. Through traffic will not be permitted.

These updates respond to ongoing safety concerns, including speeding, traffic violations, and high pedestrian activity near Wickaninnish Elementary School. The changes are intended to reduce risk and create a safer, more predictable environment for students, residents, and all road users.
Vehicle access to offshore permit parking will remain in place while the District continues broader transportation planning through the Transportation Infrastructure Masterplan.

The Masterplan will be developed throughout 2026, with completion anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027. Public engagement will help guide future transportation priorities and improvements.
