New Public Art Crosswalks Installed

In 2024, the District of Tofino’s Public Art Advisory Committee issued a call for artists to create two permanent crosswalk designs that honour important communities and shared values in Tofino. These recently installed works now form part of Tofino’s public spaces.

This community project was developed in collaboration with Coastal Queer Alliance and Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation. Through that process, the following artists were selected to bring the designs to life:

  • Tleḥpik Hjalmer Wenstob
  • Nicki Love

The crosswalk at Main Street and Third Street was designed by Tla-o-qui-aht artist Tleḥpik Hjalmer Wenstob. It reflects ongoing reconciliation efforts, honours the children who were lost through the residential school system in Tofino and across Canada, and recognizes the strength and resilience of residential school Survivors.

The crosswalk along Campbell Street at the entrance to the Municipal Office parking lot was designed by Hesquiaht First Nation artist Nicki Love. It recognizes the local 2SLGBTQI+ community and helps foster visibility, inclusion, and belonging.

These installations help create inclusive public spaces while reflecting community identity, history, and respect.

Residents and visitors are invited to visit these recently installed permanent crosswalks and experience this new public art.

This project was funded through the District of Tofino’s participation in the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) program.
