Posted: May 5, 2026 | By: Communications
Due to the time of year, forecasted dry summer conditions, recent increases in water use, and typical seasonal patterns, the District of Tofino will enter Water Conservation Stage 1 beginning Tuesday, May 12, 2026. These measures will remain in effect until further notice.
Stage 1 focuses on awareness and encouraging voluntary reductions in water use to help protect the community’s supply and reduce the risk of stricter conservation stages and restrictions later in the season. Small changes across the community can make a meaningful difference.
Beginning in Water Conservation Stage 1, the following guidelines and restrictions are in place:
For Businesses
Visitor-facing businesses are required to support conservation efforts by displaying water conservation materials in/at all of the following areas:
- Accommodation units/rooms
- Restaurant tables
- Kitchens
- Cash Registers
- Booking Offices
- Websites
Businesses can create their own water conservation messaging materials or download/print materials from this toolkit. Materials are also available at the Tourism Tofino Visitor Centre & the District of Tofino Municipal Office.
These materials must be displayed and communicated until water conservation stages have been lifted.
For Residents
Residents are encouraged to reduce unnecessary water use and be mindful of overall consumption.
Outdoor water use:
- Watering of food plants is permitted using a handheld container
- Watering of lawns, gardens, trees, and landscaped areas is permitted using:
- A handheld hose with an automatic shut-off mechanism
- A handheld container
- A sprinkler
- A drip irrigation system
Simple ways to conserve water:
- Check your property for leaks or drips and repair them promptly
- Keep showers to four minutes or less
