Mayor Law announced that the 2022-2027 Municipal and Regional District Tax (MRDT) Application has been approved. A portion of the MRDT revenue will go towards the Wastewater Treatment Plant debt servicing.
Mayor Law thanked the following people for their support: Minister of Finance, Selina Robinson and her staff; Minister of Arts, Culture Tourism, and Sport Melanie Mark and her staff. Minster of Municipal Affairs Nathan Cullen; MLA for Mid Island-Pacific Rim Minister Josie Osborne; Destination BC; All the resorts in Tofino and the surrounding community; West Coast Hospitality Association and JJ Belanger and Christopher Fehr; Tofino-Long Beach Chamber of Commerce and Jen Dart; Samantha Hackett; Tourism Tofino and Nancy Cameron; Tofino Ratepayers Association and Jack Gillies; the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and Chief Thomas George; the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks and Saya Masso; and Kirby Brown who mediated the roundtable for the MRDT discussions. Mayor Law credited the community with working so hard together to achieve this goal.
Presentation and Reports
2022 Council Grants
Mayor Law moved that the Council Grants for 2022 be referred to a standing committee of Council to consist of Councillor McMaster, Councillor Challenger and Councillor Thicke and one staff member to consider the Council grants to then be recommended at the next regular Council meeting.
Communications Update
Council heard an update regarding recent communications projects including recent initiative statistics, collaborations with other local governments and upcoming communications projects.
Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 1286, 2022 (Secondary Suites)
Council gave third reading and adoption to the zoning amendment bylaw Secondary Suites. This amendment brings the Tofino zoning bylaw into alignment with recent changes made to the BC Building Code. This bylaw had a Public Hearing held April 26, 2022.
