District of Tofino and CUPE Local118 Move into Mediation

TOFINO, B.C. – The following statement was issued by the District of Tofino on the ongoing collective agreement negotiations:

The District of Tofino (the “District”) and CUPE118 have been in ongoing and productive conversations moving towards a new collective agreement over the last several months.

We are going into mediation sessions at the end of June facilitated by an outside mediator appointed by the Labour Relations Board. We welcome this positive and important next step towards our mutual goal of a new agreement. We are confident we have enough shared goals and interests to reach an agreement in a timely fashion.

We are proud of the deep relationships we have with our staff at the District and have great respect for them and the work that they do.

Our focus is, and will always be, on the health and safety of the residents of Tofino, as well as our staff, by ensuring a safe and healthy work environment.

In the weeks ahead, regardless of the outcome of the mediation, residents can be assured that essential services will be maintained to ensure the health and safety of our community.

Out of a deep respect for the mediation process, Council and staff will not be providing media interviews or statements outside of official District communications.

We want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who is involved in the process and look forward to continuing a positive and productive dialogue as we move towards a final agreement.
